Applying to Oxbridge

We are a school which takes pride in our provision of academically rigorous education.   Pupils at Merchant Taylors' not only receive a thorough grounding in their subjects but are encouraged to cultivate an intellectual curiosity and love of learning for its own sake.   As part of this, we actively promote applications to the best universities, amongst them the universities of Oxford and Cambridge and support a number of the brightest and best students each year with their applications.

MTS has a fine record of placing boys in our two most historic universities. There is no doubt that there are some aspects of the process of application to Cambridge and Oxford, such as the tradition of the Socratic interview and the quality of written work submitted, where boys will very definitely benefit from some quiet advice from an experienced teacher. Oxbridge lessons are provided in the vast majority of subjects at the end of the Lower Sixth Year and during the Autumn Term of the Upper Sixth Year.

For more information, contact our Oxbridge Coordinator, Lucy Nicholas.

All prospective Oxbridge applicants; please download the Summer Programme template

The intention is to encourage all those who have expressed an interest in applying to reflect on the sort of reading/work experience relevant to their chosen subject that they might undertake in the long vacation and structure it accordingly.  It is the responsibilty of pupils to complete the sheet independenly, though they may seek a little guidance from teachers.  Completed forms to be returned to your Head of Department and UCAS Advisor (if different) by June 30.

Needless to say, your motives for completion of such Summer work should emphatically not be utilitarian in nature.
