Combined Cadet Force

Welcome to the web pages for the Merchant Taylors’ contingent of the Combined Cadet Force or CCF.

Tug O' War - Inspection Day 2006

The CCF is a national organisation sponsored by the Ministry of Defence that provides the boys with the opportunity for adventurous activity and personal development. Our training promotes responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness , perseverance and a sense of service. The capacity to lead, bolstered by self-confidence and self-discipline will encourage the boys to play a full and active part in their community, now and in the future.

The contingent at Merchant Taylors’ includes girls from the nearby St Helen’s School and cadets join at the age of 14 with a commitment to two years membership and they will attend one camp. The emphasis is on adventurous activity and there are usually four trips to walk and camp in wild country or to canoe and climb.

Annual camps play a big part in the boys training as cadets and these are at different places each year. Friday afternoons make best use of the huge range of facilities here at school, including the sailing lake, swimming pool, climbing wall and shooting range. Cadets are required to pass some tests in order to advance their military knowledge but the emphasis is on active participation and leadership.

There are sections for all three services and although the emphasis is a little different – as are the uniforms – they share a great deal in common as you will see on these pages that highlight just some of the activities you get to undertake.
