Pastoral Care and the House SystemCare is at the heart of Merchant Taylors’. Our underlying aim is that every boy is happy and fulfilled in his schooling and the teaching staff are united in the belief that if you are at ease in the community you will achieve far more. Equally we believe that if you are involved as widely as possible outside the classroom, you will do significantly better than boys whose interests are confined to the narrowly academic. Our goal, therefore, is to provide the best possible support to enable each one of you to achieve that important balance in your education; it is important to us that, every day, each one of you is able to do something that you love and that you are good at. We look to develop a strong family spirit at Merchant Taylors’. You will find that you are treated courteously, as young gentlemen and in return you will see that the boys' respect for the teachers is also genuine. We all eat together in the Dining Hall and school lunch is included in the school fee to foster this family spirit and corporate identity. The Head Master has lunch with a small group of you on most days. The tutorial system is the key to realising our goals. Each one of you, on admission, is assigned a teacher as his personal tutor. This tutor will stay with you throughout your time at MTS. The tutor is responsible for all aspects of his or her tutee’s welfare, education and personal growth and is the first point of contact for parents. This system leads to the development of a close relationship between you, your parents and your tutor, enabling us to recognise and celebrate your successes immediately and nip in the bud with equal speed any problems that may turn up. Your mother and father will feel more confident that you are OK because they know that you always have one particular teacher you can turn to - a teacher who knows you really well and who will help you become a confident, balanced and successful individual. Tutors operate within a House system and Heads of House provide a further source of support and advice for you, your parents and the teachers. The Heads of Lower, Middle School and the Sixth Form are responsible mainly for issues affecting year groups as a whole, but they do also deal with some of the more pressing individual pastoral issues. The Chaplain and the School Counsellor are on hand if you are in a situation where you feel you need confidential consultation. The whole system is overseen by the Second Master and it ensures that your well-being and the well-being of every pupils always at the heart of the school's concerns. Summary We have eight houses. The House Tutor system forms the basis for both our pastoral care and our academic supervision. Each of you has a tutor and the tutor stays with you right through your time at MTS. Tutors meet with you every Thursday morning at 08.40 in their tutor rooms for 25 minutes. Additional meetings may be arranged outside these times as needs must. Tutor groups are typically small, so your tutor can get to know you really well. Each tutor has a maximum of fourteen tutees aned obviously they come from every age group, so you get to know boys outside your own year group and older boys can help you settle in. Each new boy will get a letter before September to welcome you to the school community.
