ICT and Computing

There are five broad dimensions to ICT at MTS:

  • Using ICT across the curriculum to support learning and teaching
  • Boys developing their ability to learn and research independently using ICT
  • Boys interacting with their peers and the wider world through networking
  • Boys in the Lower School learning general ICT skills such as word processing, spreadsheets, desk top publishing, graphics, etc.
  • Boys following specific ICT and computing courses such as GCSE and A Level

Aims

The broad aim of ICT provision at Merchant Taylors' is to support teaching and learning so that teachers and pupils can take full advantage of the facilities that today's computer systems provide. A second aim, arising from this, is to ensure that all boys use ICT to support and develop their capacity to carry out research and work independently.  Boys adapt their learning to the breadth of sources and flexibility of presentation that modern computer systems allow.  The skills they acquire will support them in higher education and in the world of work beyond. Whenever possible, we encourage boys to define their own problems, reseach and present solutions and then evaluate their areas of success and those where they need to improve: in this sense, our approach to learning and teaching using ICT forms a natural model for the sort of investigative and problem-solving learning that characterises the MTS curriculum as a whole.

There is a programme of lessons in years 7, 8 and 9 where boys are taught the basic principles of ICT such as communicating information, data handling and modelling: GCSE ICT (full course) is offered as an option in the Divisions and Fifths (Years 10 and 11) and A Level Computing is taught in the Sixth Form.

There is also a complementary programme of cross-curricular ICT that embraces all other curriculum departments and extends and enhances what is done in ICT lessons.  The basis of ICT in years 7, 8 and 9 is the National Curriculum and teachers have been given guidelines on how they should use ICT in their work.  Teachers are expected to use ICT to support and enhance teaching and learning in their own subjects; contributions to the ICT programme are a welcome bonus that is achieved through cooperation between the respective departments and the ICT staff. Subject teachers are encouraged to bring their work inside the ICT framework so that they meet both their own goals and make a real contribution to the school’s ICT programme. The ICT teachers provide support and advice to enable other departments to prepare their schemes of work and lesson plans so that they can achieve best practice in their use of ICT. A number of departments have their own computer suites and almost all classrooms have projectors and electronic whiteboards. Some examples of the way the programme for cross-curricular ICT, broadly based on the National Curriculum, is delivered would be:

Computer Club

Mr Scott runs a computer club on Tuesday lunch times while Mr Hirst runs a session for the Fourth Form on Fridays after school (one term per year).  The computer rooms are open for use by boys from around 8.00 am to 6.00 pm and there is a constant flow of boys through the rooms doing a range of activities.

ICT Resources

There are four ICT rooms in the ICT area for classes of different sizes (24, 24, 18 and 7).  There is a small number of computers for use by pupils in the adjacent technicians’ room (IT53) and there are computer facilities all around the school including departmental facilities in: Design and Technology, Art and Design, the Library, MFL (3 language laboratories), English, Science, Careers and the Sixth Form study area.  There is a wide range of software on the computers including generic packages such as MS Office and subject-specific software.  There is fast internet access on all computers with a strong filter to exclude inappropriate content.  The school actively seeks out software that will enrich the academic and social life of the boys and is currently implementing its own private social network (using Ning) and VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

The computers are used intensively throughout the day by a wide range of boys and staff and computers are completely integrated into the life and work of the school.  A wide range of activities are carried out on the computers including:

  • Course work: this is routinely word processed in a number of subjects including English, Design and Technology, History, Geography and ICT;
  • Co-curricular activities: Young Enterprise, Cadets, Asian Cultural Society, PHAB: almost any group in school that produces posters and keeps accounts;
  • School magazines: these are generally produced on computers in school and include Third Dimension (years 7 and 8), Eclipse (years 10 and 11) and Symposium (Sixth Form);
  • Homework: a wide range of homework exercises are done on computer with word processed documents incorporating material sourced from the internet; it is increasingly common for boys to be asked to use presentation software for work done in class and at home;
  • Recreation: boys can surf the internet in their free time such as the lunch hour and after school.

ICT Staff

There are two full-time teachers of ICT, Mr Clive Hirst (Head of Department) and Mr Matthew Scott.  They teach the ICT courses and also advise teachers from other departments on cross-curricular ICT.  As well as the Key Stage 3 lessons the ICT staff teach GCSE ICT, A Level Computing and a number of General Studies courses such as programming, logic and presentations. Clive Hirst and Matthew Scott both serve on the IT Steering Team, Clive Hirst in his capacity as leader of curriculum IT and Matthew Scott with responsibility for faculty training.
