Mathematics IGCSE – Frequently Asked Questions
What is IGCSE (International GCSE)?
It is a GCSE exam, originally designed for overseas candidates. As it doesn't follow precisely the National Curriculum, it isn't available to state schools, but a large number of independent schools have changed over to it, because it's seen as more stimulating and rigorous. The questions closely resemble those for GCSE.
What is its status?
It's accepted as at least equal to GCSE by all Further Education establishments (some of which actively prefer it), by employers, etc.
How does it differ from GCSE?
There is no coursework in IGCSE. Instead there are several topics not included in GCSE. These extra topics include set theory, functions and elementary calculus. There are two written papers (and nothing else); in both papers calculators are allowed. The written papers are taken in late April/early May, as opposed to early June.
Why is Merchant Taylors’ taking IGCSE?
We feel that IGCSE is a better course, for those who expect to continue with the subject as well as those who do not. It stretches the pupils appropriately and provides a more structured course.
How do standards compare?
IGCSE papers are designed to be of exactly the same standard as home GCSE papers.
What resources are available?
Two textbooks have been specifically written for this course. We use these books and are very pleased with them. Past papers have been produced (we will supply these – please don’t get them yourselves), in addition to our “home-grown” resources.
When do results come out?
At the same time as all other GCSE results.
Who will take the exam?
As in the past, decisions about exactly which boys take early-entry will be made around October of the Divisions year. Until then, the status of individual boys, and even the likely number of sets to be entered, is provisional. There is a trial exam in February for those selected. Those who are selected for early entry can withdraw if wished at almost any time before the exam. For further details, please click here to read the Parents’ Guide to the Curriculum.
The Maths Department is confident that IGCSE is providing an exciting and beneficial course for our pupils.
