Sir Robert Smith MP – The Liberal Democrat Party

Sir Robert won his seat from the Conservatives in 1997 and won 46% of the vote in the recent 2005 elections to regain his seat. He gave us a most insightful speech on the goings-on within the Liberal Democrat party as well as highlighting the party’s stance on issues such as the electoral system, the environment, and also their presence within the Scottish Government.

MTS remembers Gallipoli

Commander K G Bridgeman leads the MTS contingent

Merchant Taylors’ CCF cadets were at the Cenotaph to commemorate the ninety-first anniversary of the Gallipoli landings on April 25th 1915. Our boys attend this ceremony - now known as ANZAC Day - every year to honour the fallen with cadets from St. Helen’s. (The Combined Cadet Corps brings together MTS boys and St. Helen’s girls).

Alan Duncan OMT addresses the Sixth

On Friday 17th January, Alan Duncan, Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, Conservative MP for Rutland and Melton, and Former Head Monitor of Taylors’ came back to his old school to talk to the Upper Sixth. After meeting with members of staff and several pupils over lunch, Mr. Duncan presented his lecture “Politics, now” to the sixth form.

Lord Faulkner OMT speaks to the 6th Form

On Friday 25th January, Lord Faulkner of Worcester, a Labour Peer and Treasurer of the Parliamentary Railway Committee came back to Merchant Taylors’ to meet with and speak to pupils of his old school.

Nothing could better prove how vibrant our Classics and English departments are than the recent spate of old boys who’ve hit the best-seller lists. Three recent OMTs can be found in any Borders bookstore and Hollywood has already given the green light to several screenplays based on the stories.

Sir John Sulston, OMT, Nobel Laureate

Sir John Sulston, OMT, Nobel LaureateSir John Sulston, (OMT 1954-60), has been awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine for 2002. Dr. Sulston began his work on the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans back in 1969 and completing its genome sequence has been his 'real life's work'. Dr. Sulston is also responsible for sequencing a third of the human genome.

Robert Orford, Audi Young Designer
Robert Orford, from Watford, was "crowned" the Audi Design Foundation "National Young Designer of the Year" last weekend. The 19-year-old former Merchant Taylors' School student was one of 28 finalists displaying design projects in a prestigious ceremony staged at the Baltic Contemporary Arts Centre in Gateshead last Saturday (21 Sept).
