Andrewes HouseLancelot Andrewes was a pupil at the school in 1561- a classmate of Edmund Spenser, Thomas Kyd and Thomas Lodge. To this day he remains one of the most gifted linguists who has ever attended the school. He went on to an extraordinarily distinguished career at Pembroke College, Cambridge and then in the Church. He became Chaplain to Queen Elizabeth I and her successor, King James, gave him the influential position of Lord Almoner. This was the beginning of Andrewes' meteoric rise - first, Bishop of Chester, then Bishop of Ely, finally Bishop of Winchester and Privy Counsellor. Amongst his many writings, his most important work arose from his leading position as translator and overall editor of the King James' Bible. The following words, spoken at his funeral, reveal his mastery of over 20 languages, ancient and modern: Members of the House wear purple ties, and the Wednesday morning meetings take place in the Great Hall. Andrewes House is one in which house spirit and team work are key. We pride ourselves in being a House that excels in academic, sporting and cultural aspects of school life. Throughout their time in the House the boys learn the enjoyment of taking part in House competitions and of representing the House in a variety of activities around the school.
In the last week of the summer term, just before the Summer Serenade, House Drinks are held. This is an informal gathering at which all boys and their families are welcome. Some time during the summer holidays all new boys are contacted by their tutor. The tutor system is an essential part of the daily running of the school and every boy will remain with the same tutor throughout his time at Merchant Taylors’.
