Chemistry
Welcome to the Merchant Taylors' Chemistry Department. Chemistry is the central science and one that is constantly evolving and moving forward as new advances in technology aid in the search for life saving drugs and life enhancing materials. As scientists strive to design and synthesise pharmaceuticals that will help combat cancer, HIV and even the common cold they are reliant on their knowledge of how these hugely complex molecules work. This begins with a basic grounding in the common reactions met in Chemistry at school. Similarly, a grounding in Chemistry is essential for those who wish to go on and be involved in any way in vetrinary, medicine, pharmacy, food sciences, mechanical and chemical engineering or material sciences. The academic rigour of the subject at AS and A2 level also ensures it provides a good grounding for less obvious career options such as accountancy and business. At Merchant Taylors' Chemistry is taught by five members of the department in four teaching labs and three other classrooms. Chemistry is a practical based subject and as such great priority is placed on these lessons, which are backed up by an excellent support team. Approximately 100 pupils study the subject in the Sixth form and over the last five years 85% of them have achieved either A or B grades. Over the last four years 79% of all GCSE candidates secured an A* grade and we have also twice been represented in the UK team for the Chemistry Olympiad.
