Economics and Politics

At MTS we offer Economics & Politics at AS and A level.  Our aim is to develop the students’ powers of analysis, evaluation and critical thinking that will complement their studies in whichever fields they choose to follow. We aim to stimulate enthusiasm for - and knowledge of -current affairs at both a UK and global level and turn out informed and interested students. Although significant numbers of our students do go on to read a related degree at university, the department feels that the AS and A level courses provide an excellent opportunity to develop a working knowledge of these disciplines, and the kind of analytical methods that they use, without necessarily implying the need for further study. We seek to stretch the most able beyond the confines of A level, while ensuring that all of our students achieve the very highest standard. We offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities to extend the students' opportunities to develop their understanding of the social sciences beyond what classroom study will allow.

Sir William Joynson-Hicks, Home SecretaryIllingworth's take on Maudling's April 1963 Budget

Merchant Taylors' has been providing England with prominent politicians and economists for nearly 450 years. Edmund Spenser, the poet, was also Sheriff of County Cork and prominent in Irish politics. Bulstrode Whitelocke, the parliamentarian, was a great influence during the attainder of Strafford and later on Oliver Cromwell, for whom he was Keeper of the Great Seal.

Lord Robert Clive was, of course, instrumental in the success of the British Empire in India. Sir william Joynson-Hicks ("Jix") was Conservative Home Secretary and more recently, Reginald Maudling has been Home Secretary and today Alan Duncan, MP, is Shadow Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. The school continues to have a strong presence in the House of Commons in all the major political parties. In Economics, Alfred Marshall's ideas (on 'marginal utility' and supply and demand) became the dominant ones in British micro-economic thinking for many years and there is still an annual Sixth Form lecture at the school in his honour. His classic Principles of Economics can be read online here.
