General StudiesThis programme is designed to encourage students to use the two years in the Sixth Form to develop an involvement in subjects and interests beyond the scope of what is covered in their AS and A2 courses. A broad and varied range of courses is on offer, ranging from continuation language classes to Psychology, with others encompassing a range of contemporary, ethical, cultural political and media studies. Philosophy, Science and Mathematics are all represented and an Information Technology course (with certification) is taken by all at some stage in the Lower Sixth. Our sixth formers are asked to take three courses during each Sixth form year: two in the Winter Term and one in the Spring Term, whilst all will take the AS Level in General Studies at the end of the Lower Sixth. This is viewed with increasing regard by universities, and the fact of having followed a broad General Studies programme may well strengthen their UCAS applications and help them to impress at interview. In addition, the A2 examination is taken by some at the end of the Upper Sixth. The final weeks leading to the examination papers are devoted to teaching whose specific aim is to prepare them to take them. However, it is hoped that the two years in the Sixth Form will see a notable development in students’ work habits and a development of a range of skills in a way that will also help with the examination. One very important thing about GS is that the courses have emerged from the personal interests and enthusiasm of those who teach them, and this gives them a special value. They therefore offer a particularly special kind of intellectual stimulation and challenge! end. |
