Pandemic warnings and MTS

Dear Parent

Further to recent advice received from the Government I am writing to update you on the School’s response to a potential swine flu outbreak at the School.

The latest scientific advice from the Government is that individual school closures are now of limited benefit in stopping the spread of disease and so, if there were to be an outbreak at Merchant Taylors’, we still would remain open.  In the vast majority of cases the symptoms are mild and very little different from those for ‘normal’ flu.  There will be, as there usually is, a priority winter vaccination programme for those with underlying medical conditions that might make them more vulnerable.

Advice on individual precautions remains very much as it was so would you please encourage your son to bring a plentiful supply of tissues in to School, to use them for all coughs and sneezes, and to dispose of them immediately.  In the event of your son showing 'flu-like symptoms please keep him at home and contact the National Pandemic Flu Service on 0800 1513513 or at   https://www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk/.  Please also notify us at the same time, and keep us informed of the outcome of any consultation.

We will, of course, issue further updates should this advice change in any way.

Further details can be found in the relevant school policy that can be downloaded by clicking here

Swine Influenza

MTS parents will be aware that on 29 April 2009 the World Health Organisation (WHO) raised its alert level to 5 because of the international spread of the swine flu virus. The risk in Northwood is very slight but we have reviewed the school’s procedures for dealing with a possible pandemic and have contingency plans in place in the unlikely event that they are required. The government has issued some advice on sensible precautions to take to mitigate the risk of spreading the disease and measures have been taken to ensure that the school is meeting these guidelines. MTS will continue to monitor the situation, but given the current levels of threat, there is no need for MTS to take any other immediate action.

The Health Protection Authority has issued the following advice to schools:

"Schools need to take no specific action regarding swine flu. Any children who have been to an affected country, or had close contact with someone who has, and have become unwell, should stay at home and contact their GP or NHS Direct for advice and possible follow up. In the meantime, the advice contained on the HPA website is updated daily and provides plenty of information. And of course, it is always sensible infection control advice to observe good hand hygiene and to follow the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it…’ advice re coughs and sneezes."

We are prepared in terms of policy, planning and emergency procedures should the swine influenza virus spread further and begin significantly to affect the UK. Should any symptoms of swine influenza develop at home, parents are urged, in addition to contacting NHS Direct on 0845 4647 (or their GP) to contact the School as soon as possible. If you would like a copy of the School’s Human Influenza Pandemic Policy, please contact the Head Master's P A.

Avian Influenza

Despite the absence of recent press coverage, the School continues to monitor the situation and will follow the advice of the appropriate national and local governmental bodies as and when it is issued.  The School grounds are checked regularly and any appearance of dead birds will be reported to the appropriate authority. In formulating a policy to cope with the predicted outbreak of avian influenza and its possible transmission to the human population, the School will have as its priorities:

  • The health and safety of our pupils and staff
  • The continued education of our pupils
