Merchant Taylors’ School received a glowing report in its autumn 2002 inspection, which described it as “an excellent School with notable strengths in many areas”. It is an overarching judgement that places Merchant Taylors ’ among the very best schools in the country.

Among the ‘notable strengths’ were:

  • ‘Outstanding’ public exam results, arising from ‘very good value added at both GCSE and A level’
  • The teaching comes in for high praise, with over 80% of lessons inspected described as ‘good, very good or outstanding’.
  • The one-to-one tutoring system available to all pupils is ‘a major strength of the school’.
  • The extra-curricular activities offered, and the facilities that support them , attracted the highest praise.
  • There was strong admiration for the multi-cultural atmosphere of the school: “the atmosphere of tolerance and mutual respect amongst the pupils is remarkable and permeates the whole school”.

The boys emerge as the stars of the Inspection report – in their attitude to learning , their behaviour and their consideration for one another.

The report says: “Across all age groups the pupils’ attitude to their learning and personal development is very good and their behaviour exemplary. This enhances both the academic and social environments; it is a great strength of the school.”
