MathematicsMaths has a vital place in the culture of the School. It is consistently the most popular subject at A-level; around 80 boys taking A-level Maths each year, and of these, about 20 will take Further Maths as well. Exam results are outstanding , but more important is the emphasis given to understanding and enjoyment of the subject. We offer a very flexible series of courses, tailored to individual needs. For instance, the strongest pupils are given ample opportunity to stretch themselves, not only by the provision for early-entry IGCSE (typically taken by half the boys in any one year group) but also by providing challenging problems, entry to the National Mathematics Competitions and Olympiads, and extra-curricular activities such as an Inter-house Competition. At the other end, there are small sets and extra classes for those who find the subject hard. The subject is streamed throughout, with the setting reconsidered frequently and regularly (at least once every year and usually more often). The overall approach to the subject is at heart traditional, but we also use a wide variety of modern methods to enhance understanding and learning. Over the past three years, twenty pupils have gained places at top universities to study mathematics. Julian Slator |
