Mulcaster House

The House is named after Richard Mulcaster (1532-1611) who was the first Head Master (1561-1586) of the school.

Mulcaster is a world-famous figure in the history of education. He was a fine scholar with, for that time, revolutionary ideas about education. He maintained that ‘the body must be trained as well as the mind’ and so ‘schools should be built next to fields on which pupils can exercise’. He produced the first rules of football and introduced the idea of a referee!  He broadened the curriculum to include ‘music, drawing and drama’ and yearly his pupils presented plays to the Court of Elizabeth I. He felt strongly that there should always be ‘co-operation between parents and school’. he was probably the model for the Head Master, Holofernes, in Love's Labour's Lost and certainly the model for 'good shephearde Wrenock' in Spenser's Faerie Queene.

When the present House system was developed after the Second World War, Mulcaster was an obvious name to be commemorated.

A tutor typically has around a dozen tutees spread across all year groups and it is the tutor who will stay with each boy throughout his time at the school. Each tutor will make contact with parents before their sons join the school in September. The tutors will meet their new tutees on the day before term starts and the parents at an evening soon after the beginning of term.

Inter-House Competitions take place during the year and boys are strongly encouraged to take part in as many of these as they can. There are competitions for all ages in a wide range of activities and teams are organised by the boys with support from the staff. This is done at the House meeting during which we also hear House Competition reports from the team captains and a reading chosen by a House Prefect.

To conclude the school year, pre-concert (Summer Serenade) House Drinks are held in the last week of the Summer Term. This is a relaxed and enjoyable occasion at which boys, their families and the tutors can meet informally.

In the House we hope to continue and develop the ideas of Richard Mulcaster; we are friendly and successful, and we look forward to meeting new Mulcastrians each year.
