Concerts and Public Performances

If you learn an orchestral or band instrument (either through the school or with private teachers) you are encouraged to join one of the schools’ ensembles. Major concerts during the year include performances by all the school’s choirs, bands and orchestras, and there is an annual concert at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall in the City of London.

The Senior Orchestra is run jointly with St Helen’s School for part of the year . This pooling of the best players from both schools provides exceptional opportunities to perform really challenging concertos and symphonic works. The Concert and Wind Bands are large symphonic wind orchestras for junior and advanced players and the Chamber Orchestra is open to the most accomplished string players. Chamber groups and the Dixieland and Swing Bands cater for more specialised interests at a variety of levels, and call on the expert specialist coaching of the visiting staff .

The School Choir of boys and staff performs at all concerts and on many school occasions, including the Triennial Service at St Paul’s Cathedral, the School Carol Service and for Merchant Taylors’ Company functions in the City of London. The Merchant Taylors’ St Helen’s Choral Society is open to all pupils, staff, parents and friends of the two schools, and many local preparatory schools, and performs a major choral work each year with professional orchestra and soloists. The vocal ensemble Plaine and Easie Voyces has made a highly accomplished CD and frequently sings at concerts outside school. The Choir and Chamber Orchestra gave concerts in Italy and France in 2000, the Chamber Orchestra visited France in 2002, and the Choir is touring the Czech Republic in 2005.

Chamber concerts provide opportunities for the performance of solos and chamber music in an informal atmosphere, and the annual Music Festival at the end of the Summer Term fills every corner of the school with music at every hour of the day, and culminates in an outdoor 'Summer Serenade' in the Quadrangle on the final evening of term.
