New York was glistening majestically – from the bright lights of late night Times Square to the beautiful reflections of midday in the mirrored curtain walls of skyscrapers . We all climbed to the top of the Empire Sate building and marvelled at the pattern of moving yellow taxis far below thinking only of Mondrian’s ‘Broadway Boogie Woogie ’. For a short while we became one of Manhattan’s own – travelling on the Staten Island Ferry and sailing past Lady Liberty. For the Sixth Form this was an unparalleled opportunity to soak-up the delights of NYC’s superb galleries and museums. The Frick was as English as it got – a famed collection of Old Masters, but it stood in perfect opposition to the immensely American show by ‘POP’ extraordinaire James Rosenquiste , whose enormous canvases thrilled us all. The Metropolitan was vast and provided us with some very useful references for current themes. All our favourites were there. Marcel Breuer’s brutalist design for the Whitney Museum of American Art was strong and formal, like much of the early American Modernism that it contains. Here we saw a plethora of sublime American greats including Stella’s celebratory ‘Brooklyn Bridge’, lots of Georgia O’Keeffe, Hopper and, of course, the New York School with Pollock and Rothko still compelling their audiences. The International Centre for Photography was a wonderful discovery and entertained us. Frank Lloyd Wright’s seminal building, the 5th Avenue Guggenheim, was an architectural highlight alongside the perfectly poised Chrysler building with her crown of radiant lights. The food was enormous, the streets broad and wide, the buildings uplifting and our spirits – well , they were immensely high too! The boys were perfect. Le Courbusier called it the “Beautiful Chaos”, Whitman cried “Stand up, tall masts of Manhatta”, but the greatest truth was told by Thomas Wolfe: “One belongs to New York instantly, one belongs to it as much in five minutes as in five years”. How true. We loved it. S. J. Crow |
