Sports

Merchant Taylors’ has a great tradition of excellence in games. Many former pupils have gone on to win international honours while at School, and later as members of the OMT Club. The main aim of the sports programme, however, is to offer all boys the chance to discover talent at sport, to enjoy it no matter what their ability to appreciate the importance of health-related fitness, and to find something which brings them a sense of achievement and pride.

The sports facilities are outstanding. There is a fully-equipped sports hall, a fitness gym and a heated indoor swimming pool. Nearby there are courts for squash, tennis, fives, basketball and badminton, and an indoor rifle range. There is a fencing salle, and boys can learn to sail and windsurf on the lake. Other sports include judo, canoeing, cross-country, golf on the adjacent Sandy Lodge course, croquet and clay-pigeon shooting. The field is a magnificent stretch of level ground, with room for ten cricket squares, numerous rugby and hockey pitches and an athletics track, and there is a floodlit all-weather pitch.

All boys take part in the games programme each week, beginning with the social and character-building team sports, but at other times of the week and in PE lessons they can sample the other games. As they get older and wish to specialise, they are allowed a much wider choice.
