From the Head Master
"Merchant Taylors ’ is an exceptional learning community that provides a first class education in a humane and civilised environment. We value breadth of achievement as much as success at the highest level.
Of greatest importance to us is that boys grow to be independent and free-thinking members of a diverse community and that, as they progress through the School, they develop: confidence; the essential skills for life after School; and a set of positive and morally secure values that will provide a base from which to meet the challenges of a changing (and often difficult) world.
Above all we want pupils at the School to be happy, to be considerate of the needs of others and to feel that they are recognised as important and unique members of an exceptional organisation".

Joining Merchant Taylors'
Boys join Merchant Taylors’ at 11 or 13 (and some at 16) and it can seem, like any other secondary school, very big, especially when you contemplate the school field! The atmosphere is warm, friendly, busy and unstuffy, however. We like our traditions, but the school is also very forward-thinking in outlook. Boys joining the school are invited to come in and meet each other on numerous occasions before they start, and many of their apprehensions will then disappear . They will join a form of 19 or 20 boys of their age, who will be immediate friends, and they will also join a tutor-group of about 14 boys of all ages, where the older members will help the younger to settle in quickly and easily. Their Tutors will contact them in the holiday to arrange a meeting, and they will be given the ‘Green Book’ explaining just about everything, which is written by recent new boys for their benefit. Soon after they begin, there is a ‘New Boys’ Fair’ to help them to choose some extra-curricular activities, and their parents are invited to meet staff, tutors and the Parents’ Association (‘The Friends’) at the same time.
Academic Atmosphere
The School’s aim is to encourage talented boys to achieve the very best that lies within them, in an atmosphere in which they can enjoy their work and not feel fiercely pressured. We believe we are very successful in our pursuit of this aim, as can be seen from the table of results Merchant Taylors’ is recognised as one of the strongest academic schools in the country. Our results are achieved in a civilised and humane atmosphere, however, in which criticism is tempered with warm encouragement and an interest in each boy’s development in and out of the classroom.
