Amnesty International SocietyDownload INTRODUCTIONAmnesty International at Merchant Taylors’ School is a chapter of a Nobel Prize-winning, non-partisan international human rights organization. According to the international branch, Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights. The Merchant Taylors’ chapter will focus mainly on raising awareness in school and pursuing issues endorsed by Amnesty that our members are most passionate about. In the school, both these challenges are met by the boys. We have been involved in writing petitions to MPs and ministers.
Monthly General Meetings take place at lunch time once a month and act as a forum for debate and various stalls are set up to highlight areas of human rights abuse and the boys present their own findings to their peers while taking part in the various activities. Mission Statement The broad purpose of the Society is to both increase awareness about human rights and take action to help ensure that universal human rights are upheld. Building up the Society’s status within the school and becoming involved in regional/national Amnesty events is an important part of achieving these aims. The activities of the Society will be geared towards helping to meet these twin aims. Such activities will include: Raising awareness, Promoting Understanding, Taking Action 1. Having informative and open discussions about human rights issues at GM’s. Fundraising (at special events etc) to raise money for specific causes while creating and participating in new activities to help contribute to Amnesty Campaigns/ Amnesty donations 2. Inviting guest speakers to the school to talk about Amnesty issues/campaigns (in conjunction with CORTEX Society) 3. Holding/Attending Special events/Conferences (in conjunction with other local schools and regional/national Amnesty groups) 4. Writing human rights orientated articles for School magazines (in conjunction with the school magazines and student publications). Conducting letter writing campaigns/petitions to influential persons/institutions. Maintaining regularly updated page on the school website and on other social networks. THE COMMITTEE
