Sport at MTS
Merchant Taylors’ has a great tradition of excellence in games and sport plays an important part in the life of the School.
Many years before the phrase was first used we had a "sport for all" philosophy and our tradition of excellence stems from the breadth of involvement of all the boys. If you want to see the fixtures for cricket click here FacilitiesThe extensive and superb playing fields provide many opportunities for participation in the major team games – rugby, hockey, cricket and football. Water sports are possible on school lakes and in the swimming pool. The sports hall caters for most indoor sporting activities. There are tennis courts, a fencing piste, squash and fives courts – there are very few sports that are not available. Specialist coaches are employed where needed and are used for all participants – not simply the elite. In recent years, we have toured the Caribbean, Australia, Italy, Spain and France in Rugby, Cricket, Hockey and Golf. There are always ski trips and sailing trips.
Coaching"Coaching is top-notch. The cricket professional is Harry Latchman, backbone of the Middlesex side when they won the Championship in '67. Harry is helped out from time to time by Alvin Kallicharran (West Indies, 1972-81). Hockey we use external coaches Somar Singh ex-England Captain supported by John Shaw, another well known England player, and Mo Khalifa (coach of the current world champion) coaches squash.
Many former pupils have won international honours while at School or later as members of the OMT Club. However, our main aim is to offer all boys the chance to discover talent at sport, to enjoy it no matter what their ability to appreciate the importance of health-related fitness and to find something which brings them a sense of achievement and pride.
