Welcome to the Longstops

Welcome to Bollywood - MTS style!

We were formed in 1985 to promote greater interest and parent participation in events connected to MTS cricket.

During the year, we hold fund-raising social events to which everyone is invited. Last Summer '07 we held our very successful Bollywood Hollywood BBQ/Disco. In March we held a Sportsman's Dinner, the highlight of which was a question and answer session with amongst others, Mark Ramprakash, Alan Jones, Steve Finn and Billy Godleman. Our next event is another Bollywood Hollywood BBQ/Disco on June 7th.

Longstops have been able to fund or help fund a variety of cricket projects including: the new electronic scoreboard for the pavilion, cricket kit for the X1 and U15s, covers for the 1st X1 square; a bell for the pavilion; oak benches for the spectators; trophies for boys; netting for indoor nets; catching cradles; and a bowling machine.

We have also given support to several Under 15 and 1st X1 cricket tours to Australia, Malaysia, Barbados, Portugal, Malta and Spain. We have also been able to provide funds for specialist coaching in bowling, fielding and wicket-keeping. This year the Senior Tour is to Malaya and Singapore in July.

The Longstops also run their own cricket team and have nets throughout the year with matches against the OMTs and Staff (‘Trumpers’) during the summer.

Parents are always encouraged to come and watch their boys play cricket home or away and to attend the Longstops’ social functions, which are always good fun and a way of meeting other parents.

Recent Events

After having such a well attended and enjoyable Quiz and Curry night in March were so sorry to have cancelled the Barn dance planned for June. There was very low demand and we can absolutely understand why, given that England’s first World Cup match was on the same evening. The various Friend’s groups are allocated dates approximately a year in advance and we simply did not anticipate the clash. So we were very sorry to disappoint those who really wanted to come.

This year’s fundraising has supported the U15’s Easter tour to Spain, new bowling machine stands and player trophies for each team.

For 2011 we will again be running our ever popular Quiz and Curry night on Saturday 12 March and the Barn Dance that was to be on Saturday 14 June. We hope to see you at these events next year.
