Walter House

Walter House is named after John Walter OMT (1738-1812) who was a London coal merchant and underwriter. In 1785 he founded The Times Newspaper, and as its proprietor served 16 months in Newgate Prison for libelling the future King George IV.

The most striking feature of Walter House is its amiability and friendliness, and this is an important part of the makeup of House Assemblies which take place in the Studio Theatre on Wednesday mornings. Assemblies are varied. House Competitions are organised and reviewed.  Then, perhaps a poem or an arm-wrestle! House prefects help out here.

Over the past few years, Walter has built up a tradition in House Competitions of being particularly strong in Swimming and Indoor Hockey. This year Walter won the Junior House Football on sudden death penalties and narrowly lost the House Chess Final. Musicians also seem to flourish in Walter and we did very well in the last Music Competition, with fine performances from both our vocalists and instrumentalists.

House Assembly Studio Theatre

House colour Light Blue

The House meets once a week in the Studio Theatre for House Assembly. This involves a range of activities.Tutors meet their Tutees formally once a week in individual rooms. All new boys will be allocated to a Tutor who will look after them throughout their time at Taylors’. They will also be allocated to a House Prefect who is there to help and advise on the day to day routine and the ‘local knowledge’ that boys acquire! All Tutors will contact their new Tutees in the summer holidays to welcome them.
