Concordia Winter 2018 23 Concordia Winter 2018 22 Development I n these pages you will find a range of forthcoming events that we hope will be of interest. Since the last edition of Concordia there have been all sorts of events held, and here is a brief rundown of just some of them. Towards the end of the summer term, we held our third Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmaceutical Convention at the school. The event was well attended by parents, OMTs, and current pupils, and the combination of networking and careers advice for the pupils made it a valuable event for all who attended. On the 4th July, Merchant Taylors’ 1st XI cricketers took on Radley College at Lord’s in aT20 fixture. A good number of OMTs were in attendance to witness a dominant performance from the school, winning by a margin that meant the event was a little shorter than anticipated! As ever, the autumn term has been a very busy one for events. The perennially popular Recent Leavers’ Lunch took place on the 1st September, and well over 100 OMTs enjoyed an afternoon in the Head Master’s Garden in the late-summer sun. On the same day, many of their parents attended a barbecue in the Exam Hall and Rose Garden. This combination of events marks the start of term very nicely. In October, we hosted Graham Norton as part of our author visit programme in conjunction with Chorleywood Bookshop. This was yet another sold out Great Hall event. l t Development As part of the school’s commemorations of World War One, the school held a very moving Remembrance Service on Friday 9th November. JonnyTaylor’s reading from that service is reproduced in full on pages 14 and 15. That same weekend, the Merchant Taylors’ Company held a special Concert of Remembrance and Hope at the Birmingham Symphony Hall to mark the 100th anniversary of the Armistice. The school were brilliantly represented by a number of our musicians and choir, and many OMTs and parents were in attendance. The OMT Society’s Annual Dinner this year took place in the magnificent 16th Century surroundings of MiddleTemple Hall on Friday 16th November. 239 OMTs from the Classes of 1947 to 2018 enjoyed a wonderful evening. Speeches from this year’s OMT Society President, Christopher Hirst (1958-1965), the Head Master, Simon Everson, and OMT Society guest, Hitesh Chowdhry (1996-2001), were well received; the latter providing a hilarious insight into the recent history of the school, including drawing comparisons between the perks of membership of the JCR and post-Brexit unfettered access to the European Single Market. The Annual Dinner is a superb occasion and provides excellent opportunities for mini-reunions within this major event. We recommend booking early for 2019 which is likely to be a sell-out at the Merchant Taylors’ Hall on 15th November. Why not get a table together from your year-group?
