30 ROUNDS

In the second term of CCF, the RAF section splits up into specialism flights. This year’s options are fieldcraft, SERE, radios and navigation, first aid and drill. Having these specialisms allows RAF cadets to tailor their CCF experience to what interests them the most. Below, an NCO from each specialism has written a short overview of what their specialism is about and the kind of things they will be doing over this term. Radios and Navigation This term I am teaching the radios specialism together with Henry who is teaching navigation. The radio specialism covers the correct operation of both military and civilian radios and base stations. This will include the use of pro-words and the order of communication. I will also cover some of the physics behind radio waves. At some point there will be a two session activity covering how to lay lines in the field. All of this will be achieved through a mixture of theory sessions inside and practical sessions outside. - Cpl Thom Haynes, Radio Specialism IC SERE LCpl Anmol Singh and I will be running the SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, extraction) specialism over this term. Due to health and safety concerns, the specialism will focus on survival and evasion and won’t be including any resistance to interrogation. SERE lessons will be predominantly based on survival skills, for example, methods of lighting fires, methods of water purification and celestial navigation. The specialism will involve an escape and evasion exercise, where SERE cadets will have to stealthily sneak across the school grounds to an extraction point without being captured by the fieldcraft cadets, who will be patrolling the area and hunting the SERE cadets down. To conclude, should you survive a crash landing into a remote area, or if you get lost on your next CCF expedition, this specialism will give you the skills and knowledge to survive and find your way back to civilisation. - FSgt Jamie Johnson, SERE specialism IC
