Boys are always impressed by the sheer size and quality of the buildings and the beautifully kept grounds – the whole bringing a sense of space, which itself contributes to the pervasive atmosphere of civility and the unpressured and purposeful feel to the school community.
The Good Schools Guide comments, ‘The school has the feel of an Oxbridge college with the same sense of unhurried calm and timeless beauty. The boys, too, seem remarkably unstressed. “I think the beauty of the surroundings contributes to their good behaviour”, said one member of staff.
Facilities are first-class and are continuously modified and improved to respond to the demands of today’s education. Over 200 acres of magnificent playing fields mean that there are outstanding opportunities for all sports. There are cricket nets, a heated indoor pool, two floodlit all-weather hockey pitches, lakes for sailing and windsurfing, grass and hard tennis courts, squash and fives court, a fencing piste, an athletics track and the central, magnificent playing field. There are school teams in rugby, hockey, cricket, basketball, athletics, golf, soccer, shooting, swimming, and tennis. The school is UK Centre of Excellence for Handball. Badminton, cycling, croquet, and cross-country are also on offer.
The beautifully kept lawns and quadrangles can be used for relaxation and for activities ranging from concerts to croquet. Classrooms and corridors are spacious, light, and airy. As the Good Schools Guide says, ‘The boys undoubtedly love it’.
