U16 Indoor Hockey Squad reach National Finals

The squad was outstanding throughout the two days of the finals.

Having won through the East Regional tournament, the U16 indoor hockey squad travelled to Whitgift this weekend for the National Indoor Finals. Simply being at the tournament - putting them in the top ten sides in the country - was a serious achievement for a squad that is still very new to this form of the game.
The boys started against traditional powerhouse Millfield. A 3-2 loss showed that, despite some understandably difficult moments, we were not going to be too far off the pace. A further loss on Saturday to Sandbach - again by just a single goal - left us struggling to qualify from our group but progress was being made. The highlight of the our tournament was Sunday morning’s game against Repton which, while it again resulted in a frustrating defeat (4-3) showed how quickly we were learning. The boys’ intensity and heart were genuinely impressive here. A final loss to an extremely strong KES Southampton team was tough to take but tired legs were starting to show at this stage.
The squad was outstanding throughout the two days of the finals. While it is tough to single players out, James Cameron made some outstanding stops in goal and Dylan Byrne was a constantly threatening presence skilfully beating some of the country’s best defenders. The boys learnt extremely quickly and must surely be a factor to be reckoned with in the next couple of years.
