Clubs & Societies: The Art Café: Where Creativity Brews

Co-curricular activities welcome likeminded students and staff to nurture passions and indulge interests, forging friendships which span across classes and year groups. Our current provision is extensive, numbering at over one hundred and fifty options, with more growing each year. Each week, we seek to celebrate one of the many clubs and societies that form part of the rich fabric of Merchant Taylors’.

This week we look at The Art Café a space for creativity, imagination and fun.

The Art Café is Merchant Taylors’ junior art club, running every Monday during The Hour. It’s a space where fun and creativity come together to enrich the boys’ already vibrant artistic life at school. We focus on mini projects that are either teacher-led or, more excitingly, dreamed up and run by some of the wildly imaginative boys we’re lucky to have at MTS.

Last year, Yuvraj Bansal led a brilliant UNO project, where each member designed and carved a lino print of a UNO card. Together, they created a full, oversized deck—a playful and ambitious feat that brought the room to life.

The Art Café also hosts special one-off sessions throughout the year. Just last week, to mark World Mental Health Week, we welcomed staff and students alike for a meditative drawing workshop. Participants created intricate continuous line drawings of vases of flowers without ever lifting their pens from the page. It was a calming, focused exercise that brought a quiet energy to the room. We were especially delighted to welcome guests from the Development Office, who wowed us with their stunning contributions.

Whether it’s printing cards or drawing in silence, the Art Café continues to be a joyful space for exploration, expression, and a bit of magic on a Monday afternoon.
