Students Excel at Hertfordshire STEM Challenge Day

On a cloudy Tuesday morning, twelve students set out for the Hertfordshire STEM Challenge Day, hosted in the University of Hertfordshire. The day was designed to be a test of teamwork, something that all of us aced.

Writes Amitav T and Ayaan B:

The day was designed to be a test of teamwork, something that all of us aced. Each group was to do three activities each: Robotics (E-FIT, an electric vehicle design challenge) and a Medical Diagnostics session, which included learning how to do CPR with model patients. In robotics, we were provided with a Lego EV3 robot, which we had to code around a course in which Ethan G and Anay G won. We also learnt how to load our own music on these! E-FIT is a software that the police use for aiding witnesses in identification and design of the face of the perpetrator. A crime skit was designed. Where we had to design the face of the person who committed the crime which ended up giving some very questionable results. When designing the electric car, Aaryan C and Ayaan B won the award for the fastest electric car, with a time of 1.52 seconds! The Medical Diagnostics was an activity that tested our thinking and problem solving, by using a patients history and our examinations to try and diagnose the infection/problem. We got to use many different measuring devices to find out how our patients are. By the end, we were even able to perform CPR on Model Patients.

This day was a great experience - it allowed us to try out new qualities and gave us an insight into life at a university. Thanks to all involved in arranging it.
