Friends' Support Groups
The ‘Friends’ is an organization of parents dedicated to supporting the various activities of the school. As soon as their sons begin their first term, parents are invited to school to meet the various support organizations - the Strikers (Hockey), the Longstops (Cricket), the Yardarms (Watersports), the Serenaders (Music), the Footlighters (Drama) and the Scrummers (Rugby) to consider joining one or two. The support groups organize a busy programme of dances, quizzes, barbecues and other events which help raise funds, but whose other motive is to help parents to enjoy the social and communal life of the school. Parents can come along to any event they wish.
There is a central committee on which representatives from each support group sit, which co-ordinates the annual programme.
Parents also run the second-hand clothing sale, through the Ladies’ Association, which also organizes a biennial Christmas Fair and supports charities outside the school and various causes within it.

Welcome to the Footlighters. Our group offers support to the Merchant Taylors’ drama teachers and boys in a variety of ways. From helping out with props and costumes, selling refreshments at the shows, and other fundraising events that provide extra equipment and experiences for the drama department.
We organise social events such as Bombay Dreams Bollywood Extravaganza and A Night in the Tropics evening. We also organise smaller outings for parents such as a trips to see West End shows or getting a table together for the Merchant Taylors Guildhall quiz evening. We are always happy to welcome parents who would like to be involved either as an active member or occasional helper.
Ladies' Association & Used Uniform Shop
The Ladies’ Association was formed by Wilmot Baker, the daughter of Dr Baker, Headmaster (1870-1900) to provide a lady worker for the Merchant Taylors’ School Mission in Shacklewell, West Hackney. The Mission building still stands today with MTS School Mission carved in stone over the windows. In keeping with the founding principle we are now involved with MTS Charities and Volunteering. Although we have a very archaic name we encourage all parents both male and female to be involved. We have an active Committee of around 15 but often need more volunteers to help with events.
We also run the Used Uniform Shop.

Used Uniform Shop
The Used Uniform Shop is situated in the main school building and is open on occasional Saturdays as stated in the school calendar and as advertised in Scissorum.
Many parents allow their uniform to be sold exclusively for the benefit of charity and in this case uniform does not need to be labelled but if you wish to receive 50% of the selling price then please label each item with name, address, telephone number, size and price.
Please write these details on one side of a card or luggage label and attach it using safety pins or string. Do not use sticky labels, staples or pins. The sale price is suggested by you, but should not be more than a third of the original price. All items must be in good condition. Jackets and trousers should be individually priced. We do not sell shirts or footwear.
We welcome PlayerLayer sportswear and sports equipment. However, where a boy's name or initials are clearly evident on an item, black patches must be sewn on to cover this personalisation before it can be accepted for sale.
Please take any uniform you would like to donate/sell to the shop when it is open or leave it at the school Reception marked for the Used Uniform Shop.
N.B We reserve the right to reduce the price of items not sold after one term.
We were formed in 1985 to promote greater interest and parent participation in events connected to MTS cricket.
During the year, we hold fund-raising social events to which everyone is invited. Longstops have been able to help fund a variety of cricket projects including: the new electronic scoreboard for the pavilion, cricket kit for the 1st XI and U15s, covers for the 1st XI square, a bell for the pavilion, oak benches for the spectators, trophies for boys, netting for indoor nets, catching cradles; and a bowling machine.
We have also given support to several Under 15 and 1st XI cricket tours to Australia, Barbados, Malta, Malaysia, Portugal and Spain. We have also been able to provide funds for specialist coaching in bowling, fielding and wicket-keeping.
The Longstops also run their own cricket team and have nets throughout the year with matches against the OMTs and Staff XI (the ‘Trumpers’) during the summer.
Parents are always encouraged to come and watch their boys play cricket home or away and to attend the Longstops’ social functions, which are always good fun and a way of meeting other parents.

The MT nester is the support group for parents whose boys have finished at Merchant Taylors’.
The idea behind this support group is to retain the connections between the School and parents of OMTs, so that involvement with the School continues once your son has finished his time at Taylors’.
Involvement with this group will generally start when your son is in the Upper Sixth Form. A Leavers’ Dinner for parents will be organised and we also aim to have an informal forum where parents can share information on university choices, accommodation and packing lists. We will also discuss how as parents we are going through the change in our own lives and how we feel as empty nesters.
We believe that many parents would like to stay in contact with the School, and continue to support Merchant Taylors’ in as many ways possible. Whether this be careers advice, charitable work, or simply continuing to help out at School functions and sports fixtures.
For further information please contact Samantha Seabrook or Gordon Brown at MTneSters@mtsn.org.uk
The Scrummers are pleased to be supporting rugby at the school.
We now stock Scrummers branded umbrellas, water bottles and polo shirts - please contact Kathryn Weston Tel:07795 346369
We look forward to seeing you on the touchline over the next few weeks.
The Music Support Group exists to support and encourage the musical life of the school, both financially and to give assistance to the music staff in any way possible. It gives those with a particular interest in music the opportunity to meet socially, to contribute ideas on how music can be promoted in the school, to raise funds for equipment and tours and to help with the organisation of musical events of all kinds.
Strikers is a committee formed to promote parent participation in supporting and creating greater interest in hockey at Merchant Taylors’ School.
The aim of the committee is to promote the MTS hockey club through organising fund raising events to help purchase additional equipment, contribute funds to tours organised by the school and to enable parents to meet informally at the pitch side or through social events.
Who is on the committee?
Parents, OMT hockey and teachers are represented on the committee. Their job is to co-ordinate and organise events relating to the hockey section. The committee volunteer their time to help raise awareness of the sport inside and outside the school.
A word from the Chair
As a committee we are working together to achieve a buzz around hockey for both the boys and the parents at the school, if you are interested in joining the committee or attending any of our future events please feel free to contact us.
The Yardarms allows the parents to support the watersports at Merchant Taylors', and to get to know one another. By raising funds for equipment and organising activities outside the school which give further training opportunities to the boys, we hope to build up the capability of the school and give the boys a great experience of water sports at MTS.
Examples of the support given include:
- organising discounted training at 4 local training centres to get boys started on their training before they are at the stage of being able to choose the watersports option
- buying new windsurfers, boat covers and canoes
- organising offshore training for some boys and a schedule of discounted RYA courses across the board.
We also organise a parents vs. boys vs. OMTs race in early September at Datchet.
Our main events are the Burns Night supper (February) and the Barbecue by the Lake in the summer - both were sold out and proved very popular.
