In the first instalment of the Lower Sixth Lecture Series, the School was pleased to welcome Russell Robinson to speak to the Lower Sixths. The Sixth Form Lecture Series is organised by Ms Taylor and runs throughout the Autumn Term, giving students the opportunity to listen to talks from many interesting speakers.
The lecture, entitled “Ignorance Is No Defence”, covered some of the potential issues young people may experience with the law. Mr Robinson, a lawyer specialising in criminal defence, has over 25 years of experience representing his clients in court. In his talk, he discussed a variety of topics ranging from alcohol and drugs to the various forms of assault. For a year group which is on the verge of becoming adults (and therefore more responsible in the eyes of the law), the lecture was especially relevant and full of practical advice which was eagerly taken on board by the students. Mr Robinson’s talk was not only informative but also engaging. With his use of props and hand gestures, he captivated the audience, and the boys enjoyed the funny stories of past cases that he shared.
At the end, students were able to ask questions to better understand the topics discussed. One pupil asked the insightful question of whether Mr Robinson ever felt morally compromised when representing clients whom he believed to be guilty. Mr Robinson responded that his firm preferred not to represent any clients who privately confessed to their crimes. After the talk, he distributed a two-page document outlining key advice which students can keep on-hand and refer to if they ever get into trouble.
