Caring for Your Son

At Merchant Taylors’, the safeguarding, wellbeing and personal development of every pupil are embedded into the everyday life of the School. With small tutor groups, a strong coaching culture and a dedicated network supporting both physical and mental health, every boy is known, cared for and guided throughout his time with us.

Tutor Groups, Houses & Small Group Support

Every pupil is assigned a House Tutor, a member of teaching staff who looks after their pastoral and academic development from the day they join the School until the day they leave. Tutor groups consist of around 15 boys from across the year groups, with the older boys acting as mentors and coaches for the younger ones.

Each Tutor is supported by a Head of House, and together they ensure that every boy is known, feels valued and can give value to others. This culture is the bedrock of our safeguarding and wellbeing approach: when pupils are understood and form strong relationships with the adults around them, they not only flourish in their learning, but also feel confident in seeking support in times of need.

Comprehensive Pastoral Provision

Our pastoral provision is led by our Heads of Section and Head of Personal, Social, Health and Economics (PSHE). PSHE is taught through timetabled lessons by specialist staff in every year group, including the Sixth Form. The curriculum is carefully designed to be age-appropriate and forward-looking, helping boys to develop the knowledge and skills they need to navigate both current challenges and those they may face in the future – including critical thinking, problem-solving and collaboration.

This provision is enriched through assemblies, workshops, conferences and off-timetable days, which allow us to explore topical and sensitive issues in greater depth. Many of these sessions are delivered in partnership with local girls’ schools, providing boys with important opportunities to learn and reflect within a co-educational context.

"Leaders support pupils' mental health and emotional wellbeing effectively, including through the promotion of a culture of positivity and encouragement and much pastoral support."

Supporting Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Merchant Taylors’ is a happy school, but being a teenager is challenging, and many of our pupils may face difficulties along their journey to adulthood. Our team of school counsellors, medical staff, pastoral coaches, Mental Health First Aiders and experienced learning support and pastoral staff are well placed to support pupils with individual and timely interventions.

Pupils also support each other, as trained coaches, and buddies. Our boys can also access our Student Voice app, which allows them to report worries about a friend. Prefects, Middle School Leaders, sports captains and school council representatives are also trained to help and pride themselves on serving their community and looking out for each other.
