Middle School

In the Middle School, pupils embark on an exciting stage of their academic journey as they begin their formal GCSE and IGCSE courses. This is a time of increasing depth and challenge, where boys are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning and pursue subjects that reflect their individual interests and strengths.

Depth, Challenge, and Personal Choice

Pupils study a combination of GCSEs and IGCSEs, with both qualifications recognised equally by universities and employers. Each Head of Department selects the exam board and syllabus they believe is most suitable for our pupils, ensuring that courses are stimulating, rigorous, and well matched to the needs of our learners.

In the Spring Term of the Fourth Form (Year 9), pupils choose the subjects they will study for GCSE, with guidance from teaching staff to help them make informed and balanced choices. They move on to their GCSE curriculum early in the Summer Term, ready to embrace the academic opportunities ahead.

Each pupil selects ten I/GCSE subjects. The core compulsory subjects are:

  • English Language
  • English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Three Sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Physics)

In addition, boys must study at least one modern foreign language from:

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

Throughout the Middle School years, pupils are supported and encouraged to develop independence, intellectual curiosity, and the resilience required to succeed at the highest level.
