Celebrating Outstanding Exam Results at Merchant Taylors'

This summer, Merchant Taylors’ boys once again achieved an exceptional set of public examination results, reflecting both their talent and dedication, and the strength of the relationships that define our School.

A Level Highlights

  • 34% of all grades at A*
  • 70% of grades at A-A*
  • 27 boys achieved three or more A*s
  • Nine Oxbridge places
  • Nine boys to study Medicine

GCSE Highlights

  • 44% of grades at 9 (A**)
  • 72% of grades at 9–8 (A*)
  • 88% of grades at 9–7 (A*–A)
  • Eight boys achieved a full sweep of grade 9s

At A Level, a third of all grades (34%) were awarded at A*, with nearly half (48%) of the cohort achieving straight A* or A grades across all their subjects. In total, 70% of grades were at A*-A and 89% at A*-B, underlining the consistency of excellence across the year group. Many of our leavers will now progress to some of the most competitive courses at world-leading universities, including Engineering, Law, Medicine and the Sciences. Nine boys have secured places at Oxford or Cambridge, with a further nine going on to study Medicine.

Several departments celebrated particularly strong results: in Mathematics, 44.5% of grades were at A*; in Further Mathematics, 54% reached the top grade. Physics pupils achieved 73% at A*, while Biology and Computer Science both recorded over 80% at A*-A. In Art, every boy achieved an A or A*, with three-quarters securing A*.

As they look ahead to life at some of the UK’s and the world’s leading universities, the boys reflected on their time at Merchant Taylors’ and on what these results mean for them:

Ananth H., who will read Computer Science at Imperial College London, said: “I’m very happy – I got all A*s and definitely feel relieved. I’m looking forward to being independent, enjoying myself and meeting a lot of interesting people.”

Krish T., who achieved 4 A*s will study Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London, said: “It’s been a journey. Of course I’m happy, but what is really special is that I’ll be leaving here with so much more than just the grades – it’s the memories and friendships. I’m looking forward to being in an environment with others who love exploring and being curious.”

Ben S., who is heading to Newcastle University to study Medicine, said: “I’m really looking forward to the course – it has a very hands-on approach, with lots of clinics and dissections. I’m also excited to get to know the city and explore it, as I’ll be living there for the next six years. MTS has been amazing – it’s the people around me who have helped me get to where I am today.”

Giuseppe M., who achieved three A*s and will read History at the University of Oxford, said: “It’s amazing! My advice to younger boys would be: give it your all, but also keep a good work–life balance. That really kept me going.”
At GCSE, our Fifth Form boys also excelled. An impressive 44% of all grades were the top grade 9 (A**), the highest proportion since the return of standard grading post-Covid. Overall, 72% of grades were at 9–8 (A*) and 88% at 9–7 (A*-A). Eight pupils achieved a clean sweep of grade 9s across their subjects, while 76 boys earned eight or more grades at 9–7.

Once again, success was shared across departments. In Mathematics, 64% of exams were awarded grade 9, with 99% of the year group achieving 9–7. In the Sciences, Biology pupils achieved 64% at grade 9, Chemistry 55% and Physics 56%. Humanities and Classics also excelled, with History returning 42% grade 9s, RS 47% grade 9s, Greek 54% grade 9s and Latin securing 100% of grades at 9–7.

As they look forward to continuing their journey into the Sixth Form, several boys reflected on their results and the support that helped them along the way:

Albert V., who achieved a clean sweep of 9s, said: “It’s a great feeling to know that your work has paid off. You don’t quite realise at the time but when you open the paper, it’s all worth it.”

Nicholas N., who achieved all 9s and an 8, said: “If I could talk to my Year 9 self, I’d tell them that if you work hard, it’ll sort itself out. I’m looking forward to Sixth Form and delving into my specialist subjects.”

Pranay P., who also received a clean sweep of 9s, said: “I’m really happy with my results. I knew I’d put in the work, and the teachers’ support along with my friends’ support has been amazing throughout the last couple of years.”

Reflecting on these achievements, Head Master Simon Everson said:

“From GCSE through to A Level, these results not only reflect the hard work and determination of our boys, but also the dedication of their teachers and the unwavering support of their families. The true measure of success lies not only in the outstanding grades achieved, but the resilience, curiosity and integrity shown by these young men. Whether preparing to embark on university or beginning the challenge of Sixth Form, our boys carry forward not only academic success but the confidence and character to thrive in all that lies ahead.”

Our warmest congratulations go to all our boys – and our thanks to their teachers and families – for a summer of results that reflect the very best of Merchant Taylors’.
