Co-curricular activities welcome likeminded students and staff to nurture passions and indulge interests, forging friendships which span across classes and year groups. Our current provision is extensive, numbering at over one hundred and fifty options, with more growing each year. Each week, we seek to celebrate one of the many clubs and societies that form part of the rich fabric of Merchant Taylors’.
This week we look at Maths Society a space for logical thinking, puzzles and numerical fun.
Junior Maths Club is open to students in Year 7-9. Each week they are invited to attempt a variety of maths-based challenges. These include obscure puzzles like Futoshiki, teams relays, Maths Mysteries and maths based origami.
They club offers students the opportunity to experience a side of maths that isn’t always accessible in the classroom, all while developing their problem solving skills and working with others to tackle challenges.
In the run up to competitions like the Junior Maths Challenge or Team Maths Challange (TMC), they practice the various rounds in order to help them prepare. The team for the TMC is chosen from the regular attendee of the club. We also complete seasonal activities at various points of the year, including Pi Day and The GCHQ Christmas Challenge.
I asked a few regular attendees to write a few lines about the club:
Jayron S:
I enjoy junior maths club because I like working together with my peers to find the answers to the questions. The questions are always a mix of fun and challenging and I always have a good time trying to work them out. It also helps me to get better at maths and learn concepts I hadn’t thought of before.
Avi A:
Maths club gives me a broad vision of how fun maths can be. We do fun challenges from relays to number crosswords and JMC questions. It has helped me to strengthen my mathematical abilities.
Aditya I:
In Maths club we do fun activities where we solve problems in pairs. I really enjoy this, as it helps us work under time pressure and learn to tackle an array of different mathematical concepts. We also do various logic problems to warm, up our brains!
