Combined Cadet Force & Duke of Edinburgh

The Combined Cadet Force (CCF) and Duke of Edinburgh award are both a fundamental part of life at Taylors’ offering our boys the chance to stretch themselves with adventurous activities, engage in service to their community and develop skills for life.

The Merchant Taylors’ CCF

The CCF is a vibrant and long-standing part of life at Merchant Taylors’. Founded in 1900, it offers pupils in Year 10 and above the chance to develop leadership, teamwork, and resilience through exciting military-themed activities. Run in partnership with St Helen’s School, our CCF includes three sections: Army, Navy, and Royal Air Force.

With a modern, purpose-built HQ and outstanding facilities including: an assault course, lakes for water-based training, and a shooting range. Our CCF is one of the best equipped in the country. Cadets meet every Friday after school from 4:00–6:00pm, and each term includes a Field Day for hands-on training and adventure.

The detachment is made up of 100 Taylors’ cadets in the Army Section, 50 in the Navy, and 65 in the RAF. They regularly engage in joint training with over 100 cadets from St Helen’s
Alongside their training and field exercises, the CCF have been on many memorable trips and ceremonial events, including:

  •  The Annual ANZAC Day Parade
  • The 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem
  • Centenary Commemorations in Ypres for the end of WWI

Whether it’s navigating a field exercise, learning to sail, or flying with the RAF, the CCF offers unforgettable experiences that build confidence and character.

Duke of Edinburgh

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a nationally recognised programme that encourages young people to challenge themselves, grow in confidence, and give back to their communities. At Merchant Taylors’, we’re proud to be a registered centre for the Award, and many of our pupils take part—often alongside their CCF involvement.

The Award has three levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—and includes four key components:

  • An adventurous expedition
  • Development of a personal skill or interest
  • Volunteering or service to others
  • Physical activity

Thanks to the wide range of opportunities available at school, a large number of boys complete the prestigious Gold Award before they leave—a remarkable achievement that’s highly respected by universities and employers alike.
