Drama

Drama has a long tradition at Merchant Taylors’ and we encourage every pupil to get involved, whether on-stage, behind the curtain or in the technical booth.

“Drama increases confidence, fosters empathy and enhances communication skills - key strengths that will serve them well throughout life.”
Cheryl Clarke
Director of Drama

There are many ways for our boys to become involved with Drama, both as part of the curriculum and as through extra-curricular activities. Throughout the year, they have opportunities to act, direct or work backstage.

Every year, the Drama Department organises two major productions: The Junior Production and The Joint Senior Musical, in collaboration with St Helen’s Girls School in Northwood. These key performances are complemented by other exciting activities, including workshops, regular theatre trips to London’s West End, as well as various clubs such as the Technical Theatre Club.

Students are supported in applications to the National Youth Theatre and Drama Schools, with several securing places in prestigious programmes.

Drama is also available on the curriculum throughout the School and pupils can choose Drama as a GCSE subject and Drama & Theatre Studies as an A-Level.

The Joint Senior Production

In recent years, we have mounted productions of large musicals such as West Side Story, FAME, the Musical and Les Misérables. Recent plays have included Enron, Macbeth and Our Country’s Good.  The latest major production of West Side Story in 2024 received an outstanding review from the National School Theatre Awards with a cast member winning the award for Best Supporting Actor in a UK Musical 2025. These shows are produced in conjunction with girls from St. Helen’s.

The Junior Production

Boys in the Upper Thirds (Year 8) and Fourth Form (Year 9) can audition for the Junior Production held in the Studio Theatre. Recent productions have included Seasons of Shakespeare, Lord of the Flies, Private Peaceful and Our Day Out.
