Trips & Expeditions

At Merchant Taylors’, trips and expeditions are a vital part of a boy’s education. They extend learning beyond the classroom, bringing subjects to life while also fostering independence, resilience and teamwork. Above all, they create lasting friendships and lifelong memories.

Carefully woven into the fabric of the curriculum, our trips and expeditions bring learning to life – reinforcing classroom teaching through real-world experiences that deepen understanding and spark lasting curiosity.

From local day trips and fieldwork in subjects like history and geography to taking full advantage of our proximity to London’s cultural and scientific institutions, trips enrich every stage of a boy’s journey through the School.

Residential trips across all year groups give pupils the chance to strengthen friendships, explore new environments and immerse themselves in different cultures.

Recent highlights from our calendar include:

  • Teaching in local schools and trekking in Nepal with our Sixth Form pupils
  • Cricket tours to Sri-Lanka and Abu-Dhabi
  • A Classics exploration of ancient sites in Greece
  • Behind-the-scenes Drama workshops at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre
  • A Physics trip to CERN to see the Large Hadron Collider

These experiences do more than broaden horizons – they inspire confidence, curiosity and connection that lasts long after the journey ends.

Early in the Autumn Term, all new Year 7 pupils take part in a residential adventure - a chance to deepen budding friendships and form new ones through shared challenge and discovery.

Year 7 Team Building in the Lake District: Making Memories from the very Beginning

Over the course of three days, boys take on activities such as whitewater rafting, climbing and caving – learning to support one another, step outside their comfort zones and grow in confidence. Evenings offer time to relax, reflect, and connect with peers, tutors and teachers. This much-loved tradition is a defining moment in the start of life at Taylors’, and is still fondly recalled by pupils years later. We’re already looking forward to the next one.

“Our first activity was gorge-scrambling. Though I could barely feel my feet, the adrenaline rush of clambering over rocks and sliding through mini water slides was thrilling. It was challenging at times, but we all encouraged each other. For me, this was definitely one of the highlight of the trip.”  Devan P. (Thirds)
