During a recent GCSE Chemistry practical, we put our laboratory skills to the test by investigating how different metal ions react to heat.

Before we began, our teacher, Mr Vernice, demonstrated the process perfectly, ensuring we knew exactly how to handle the equipment safely and what to look out for. Following his excellent guidance, we used a roaring Bunsen burner flame to test various ionic compounds and observe their distinct colours.

The results were immediate and fascinating: copper (Cu²⁺) produced a striking blue-green flame, calcium (Ca²⁺) gave a clear brick-red hue, and potassium (K⁺) turned the flame a vivid lilac. Mr Vernice guided us smoothly through every step, making it a fantastic experiment that was both immense fun and a brilliant way to see our textbook theory come to life in the lab.
