DET Students Pitch Big Ideas

Writes Prahil S. (U6)

Just after the 2024/25 summer term ended, a group of three DT students: Myself-Prahil S, (U6), Krish Thakrar (Alumni), and Ciaran Davies (Alumni) left Taylors’ at 6:45 a.m. and made our way to Yamazaki Mazak UK HQ in Worcester. Upon arriving, we were welcomed by the Manufacturing Technology Association (MTA) team. After unloading our projects from the van, we each set up at our tables, displaying portfolio images on the walls and laying out our final projects, along with supporting design pieces.

Following a short introduction in one of the manufacturing facilities, we each gave a three-minute pitch to a panel of nine judges, explaining what our projects do, as well as the design process and motivation behind them. Afterwards, we explored the other impressive projects on display, enjoyed lunch, and were then treated to an eye-opening tour of the Mazak manufacturing warehouses and facilities. It was amazing to see how large and intricate some of the machines were.

The day concluded in the briefing room with the announcement of the competition winners. Although none of the Taylors’ participants won, the competition was extremely strong, and the experience made for a fantastic day of learning and inspiration.

A huge thank you to Mr Tang for chaperoning and making the day even more memorable.
