Writes Arjun G. (Divs)
On Thursday 5th February, the Taylors’ Squash Team headed to Wycombe Squash and Racquetball Club to face off against Habs, Brentwood and John Hampton School in the Quarter-Final of the National Schools Squash Competition.
Our 5th seed, Yuvraj B. (U6), made his debut with the team and won his match against Habs. He lost closely to the other schools but gained valuable experience playing for the team.
The 4th, seed Arjun G. (Divs), played against strong opponents and there were some very close matches. Unfortunately, they had the age advantage and got the best of him. However, since the games were very close and the tournament was points based, he earned valuable points for Taylors’.
Neel K. (U6) played 3rd and used his technical drop shots to outclass his opponents in every way. He had many close matches, coming away victorious in a game against Habs.
Representing the 2nd seed of Taylors’ was Nishil M. (U6), who would have had the edge over the other players if not for an unlucky leg injury. He played with such passion that even his racket strings even broke! In the end he achieved a win over Brentwood School in a nail-biting 3rd set.
Our 1st seed was none other than Joshua R. (U6). Considering that this was his first time as 1st seed, he played very well and won a game against John Hampstead School. He would go on to give the other schools difficult matches and at the same time, practice playing at the top level.
Yuvraj B. (U6th) writes:
Last Thursday marked my first opportunity to represent Taylors’ as part of the squash team, playing at High Wycombe Squash Club. It was a challenging but thoroughly enjoyable experience, and one that gave me a real insight into the high standard of squash being played at other schools.
Competing in a match setting was also eye-opening. The intensity and focus required in competitive squash is very different from casual play, and it pushed me to raise my level throughout the evening. While I was pleased to secure a win against Haberdashers, the remaining matches were all tightly fought and could easily have gone either way, which made the experience even more rewarding.
Overall, it was a fantastic introduction to school squash competitions, and I am really looking forward to more opportunities to play competitively and represent the school in the future.
Many thanks to Mr Hilton-Dennis, Mr Champness and squash coach – Adam Edge – for their support, and well done to the rest of the team — Josh R., Nishil M., Neel K. and Arjun G. — for a great evening of squash!
