Hands-On History

Writes Thomas B. (L6th)

This week in our Ancient Greek Art Class, Mr Gosden supported our learning of early Greek statue making, bringing in florist’s foam, clay sculpting tools and a lot of hope. We were attempting the ancient method for making Kouroi, and despite the challenges behind this craft, many students concluded the lesson with a rough figure. This point is a stage in the method where miners in the quarry would have made a rough outline for the statue, without any detail. The goal was to minimise weight for logistic reasons.

We are positive that our masterpieces do not do the ancient artists’ justice, but that means we have a newfound respect for these sculptors, who initially we thought made ‘simple and bad’ sculptures. Thank you also to Mrs Cebon for thinking of this unique way to engage with the material.
