House Chess Brings Highly Competitive Action

Writes Pranav M. (Divs

Over two weeks, the annual House Chess competition brought together all eight houses for a series of highly competitive and entertaining chess games. With strong performances across all boards, White eventually won the competition once again.

White House started the knock-out stage, facing Raphael in the Quarter Finals. After a strong 8-1 win, our team looked even better than last year. Our preparation and teamwork gave us a great start in our quest for the title.

In the Semis, we faced Andrewes. Despite the hard challenge, White once again delivered an impressive performance, winning 7.5–1.5. Many of the games were closely contested, but our sheer ability to convert advantages and remain composed under pressure proved decisive.

Now, only Manor stood between us and first place, the most competitive stage of the tournament: the Final. With the house title at stake, both teams fought fiercely across all boards. Manor pressed throughout the match; however, it led to a moment when I, after winning all my previous games, needed another win to keep our hopes alive in the race for the crown. With adrenaline coursing through my veins, tensions mounting, and the pressure of everyone watching my game, I somehow managed to secure a dramatic victory with only 0.3 seconds remaining on the clock. It was one of the most thrilling games of the tournament and a memorable moment for the team. Ultimately, we prevailed, winning 6-3 against Manor.

Overall, House Chess showcased a high standard of chess, with nine seeds per house battling against each other, and excellent sportsmanship from all houses.

White House’s success was the result of a consistent team effort across every round, making this year’s House Chess competition both competitive and enjoyable.

Special thanks to Mr Hughes for supporting me in my captaincy of our chess team and for encouraging me throughout our campaign; the tremendous White House team for their time and effort, as well as Mr Robinson for his consistent, unwavering commitment to making House Chess happen.
