Writes Ranvir S. (5ths)
On Wednesday the Debating Society welcomed Sir Vince Cable to the school for an interview and Q&A. Sir Vince has had an illustrious career, serving as an MP for 20 years, including five years in the Cabinet as Business Secretary, as well as leading the Liberal Democrats.
Following his speech, in which he outlined three unexpected things for aspiring politicians to bear in mind, including the importance of physical fitness and confidence, I assumed the role of interviewer for the afternoon. I posed questions ranging from his time in the Coalition Government to Brexit and the future of Europeanism in the UK – with an occasional bit of humour. His responses were insightful and clearly reflected the depth of his experience.
We then opened the discussion to the floor, and the response from the audience was extremely encouraging. I was particularly pleased by the number of thoughtful questions from younger students.
Overall, the afternoon was thoroughly enjoyable, and I hope it has sparked meaningful dialogue and debate. We hope to welcome more speakers in the future. Finally, I would like to extend my thanks to Mr Farrar-Bell and Mr Martin for their help in organising the event, and of course to Sir Vince for so generously giving us his time.
