Judgement Calls and Laughter

Situational judgement took centre stage this week, as the Medicine and Dentistry Society turned the spotlight on a few brave volunteers at the front!

First up was the medical scenario: a broken ankle that had everyone watching closely as two people played out doctor and patient. Between the dramatic limps, the enthusiastic acting, and the serious questions of what to do next, the rest of the room got stuck into debating the best response—equal parts thoughtful discussion and stifled giggles.

Next came the dental challenge, where a nervous patient met a dentist trying to calm things down and figure out the right call. Once again, just two people carried the scene, but with the whole audience chipping in, it felt like the entire room was in on the consultation. The mix of empathy, problemsolving, and creative acting made it clear that dentistry isn’t just about drills, but people too.

Finally, the social scenario was put under the microscope, showing how professionalism and friendships sometimes collide outside hospital walls. The pair at the front acted it out while the audience chimed in with opinions, and it quickly became clear these situations can be just as tricky as clinical ones.

What tied it all together were the four pillars of medicine: autonomy, beneficence, non‑maleficence, and justice. Each scenario touched on them in a different way, proving they’re not just theory but practical tools for everyday judgement. With only two actors at a time and plenty of laughs from the crowd, the hour was a brilliant mix of fun, reflection, and a reminder that the toughest calls in healthcare rarely come with a script. We can’t wait to keep the momentum going with next week’s awesome suturing course!
