Lower Sixth Pupils Present at the Austrian Embassy

Writes Agastya D. (L6th)

On Wednesday, Lower Sixth pupils involved in Frau Udell’s Academic Extension programme, The Rich Layers of Austria, visited the exquisite Austrian Embassy in Belgravia, where they received a warm welcome from the Embassy’s press team.

The pupils delivered a series of presentations on influential Austrian figures and historical events. These ranged from scientific pioneers—such as Agastya D. (L6th)’s talk on biochemist Erwin Chargaff, who helped establish the fundamental rules of DNA, and Daro B. (L6th)’s presentation on Julius Wagner-Jauregg, a pioneer in identifying biological causes of psychiatric conditions—to major historical moments, including Zhennuo W. (L6th)’s exploration of the Habsburg Empire.

In addition, current A-Level German students were given the opportunity to present their speeches in German, much to the audience’s delight.

The group was also honoured to meet the Austrian Ambassador to the UK, Dr Bernhard Wrabetz, and to hear his reflections on the presentations, as well as insights into contemporary Austrian affairs.

The day concluded with a lunch featuring iconic Austrian dishes, including the famous Wiener Schnitzel, followed by a presentation of certificates to mark the pupils’ participation.

Special recognition was awarded to Agastya D. (L6th), Rory H. (L6th), and Blake B. (L6th), who received gifts in acknowledgement of their exceptional effort, thorough research, and engaging delivery.

A huge thank you goes to Frau Udell for organising this event and for her guidance and support throughout the enrichment programme. We are also grateful to everyone involved in arranging the visit and providing such a valuable opportunity to develop our presentation and public speaking skills in such a prestigious environment. Finally, we extend our sincere thanks to the Austrian Embassy for hosting us. Vielen Dank!
