Medicine and Dentistry Society Pulls on the Heart Strings

Writes Pranay P. (L6th), Veer S. (L6th) and Daro B. (L6th)

Monday saw the amazing, unforgettable and fun grand finale to our Medicine and Dentistry Club this half term — suturing a heart! It was such an amazing way to end the three week programme, as it made everyone feel like real surgeons for the day. Being able to carefully stitch the tissue together required focus, precision, and teamwork, and it was incredible to see how the techniques everyone had learned throughout the club all came together in one hands-on activity. It wasn’t just educationally valuable; it was genuinely so much fun teaching everyone, especially as they found it exciting, slightly challenging, and completely memorable. I really hoped everyone enjoyed it. We (Pranay, Daro and Veer) are all so proud of the work done by everyone.

Hugo G. (3rds):

Over the past two weeks, I took part in a practical suturing course, and I was really excited, because it helped me get closer to my dream of becoming a doctor.

It felt like a special chance to start learning a skill that doctors use every day. I was so happy when I found out I had been chosen, because there were only a few spaces.

During the course, we practised on a thick piece of rubber that was a bit like real skin. We used special tools, and I had to concentrate really hard. Every move had to be just right, because even a tiny mistake meant starting again. My hands shook a little sometimes, but I soon realised that being patient, careful, and steady is really important in medicine.

Rohan D. (5ths):

The course gave me a better idea of what being a doctor is like, and I can’t wait to do more courses with our Medicine and Dentistry Society in the future.

I would’ve never believed that as a schoolboy I could get hands on experience with surgical grade medical equipment and explore my interests so early on. Medicine and Dentistry Society is a very apt name for a club that teaches skills directly required for a job in either field, presented in an accessible way for Thirds to Lower Sixths alike. What an experience this club gives!

Thanks for running such cool sessions.
