Top Performance in ONS Data Challenge 2025

Writes Simon Hardman, Head of Mathematics

Last term Ansh A. and Aarav P. (L6th) submitted an entry to the ONS Data Challenge 2025, which tasked them with using a dataset to produce a report which compared different areas in the UK over time. They then had to suggest evidence-based policy recommendations from their findings.

Ansh and Aarav compared two London boroughs (Tower Hamlets and Harrow) with Westmorland and Furness in Cumbria, seeking to understand why people in rural areas live longer and report higher life satisfaction than in cities, despite higher obesity and less active transport. From this, they produced a set of recommendations to improve life expectancy and satisfaction in cities.

Their work was excellent and they were selected for the national finals event, which took place this week. Ansh and Aarav’s work was highly commended, and they finished in the top three for their category.

Well done to them both!
