Panglossia Takes a Political Turn!

Writes Jos W. (U6th)

On Thursday, Sam D. (U6th) spoke to us about a current and relevant issue: is a Sixth Republic necessary to repair a broken France?

Sam addressed this topic with detail and nuance. He explained the history of the Fifth Republic, discussing the lack of executive power that triggered its introduction, while also discussing phenomena such as hyper-presidentialism and declines in political participation, which make this debate so relevant today.

Before proposing appropriate solutions, his formidable knowledge of economics helped us understand the political instability that exists in France today, and his passion and humour in discussing figures such as Marine Le Pen made this presentation enjoyable and informative.

Via proposals which were rooted in political awareness and evidence, Sam demonstrated support for a Sixth Republic that would introduce a proportional representation system and a more balanced executive. Although his audience made his life difficult by grilling him on his position in the longest Q&A session in Panglossia’s history, he managed to defend his position and consolidate our knowledge on the subject.

Thank you to Sam for this presentation.
