Today we had our inaugural SGS gathering on the subject ‘Futures of Geography’ led by Theo H. (U6th). The talk gave insights into how we can link both the study of Geography and the future through numerous binary notions.
The speaker questioned the so-called tech oligarchy in the US, where tech giants such as Elon Musk have been garnering massive political influence, undoubtedly contributing heavily to our future, with the speaker coming to the conclusion that too much power has become centralised and concentrated onto the few, posing the thought that we must aim to have a more equal future.
Overall, the talk highlighted that Geography is not just about maps and the present, but rather understanding change, connection and possibility. By looking at Geography, we can build the strongest thoughts and feelings about the future we are heading toward.
Ultimately, it was a very good way to kick this season off.
