Writes Husayn M. (U6ths)

We recently competed in The Imperial College London Science in Medicine School Prize, focusing on cardiovascular health. There was a team of six of us – Amit M., Lawrence M., Oscar W., Pranay P., Veer S. (all U6ths), and me.

We had to design an ePoster that illustrated a strategy for combining science with biomedicine to improve health and reduce deaths and disabilities.

Our idea was an app, which takes daily voice recordings as an early detection system for pulmonary oedema, and had the goal of designing a poster to promote this. We delved deep into the research before getting to work on our poster. It was fun for us to work together on something beyond the curriculum.

After we submitted our ePoster, we waited patiently for the results. We were delighted to hear that we had been selected for the finals, meaning that we had made it into the top ten teams nationally. As a result, we had to create a presentation of our findings to deliver before a panel of judges. Whilst it pushed us out of our comfort zone, it was a very rewarding experience, allowing us to gain feedback on our idea from cardiovascular specialists.

Although we narrowly missed the top spot, it was a rewarding experience that allowed us to delve deeper into the field of cardiovascular disease and biology as a whole.

We would like to thank Mrs Stuteley for all her support throughout the entire process.
